How to Make Soy Wax Botanical Candles (Fragrance-Free & Sensitivity-Safe)
There's something deeply satisfying about making something beautiful with your own hands — especially when it's also good for your body and your space.
If you've ever walked past a candle display and thought "I wish I could burn that without sneezing," this one's for you. These soy wax botanical candles are fragrance-free, clean-burning, and stunning to look at. No synthetic fragrance. No paraffin. Just warm light, dried botanicals, and good vibes.
Why Soy Wax?

Not all candles are created equal. Paraffin wax — the most common candle base — is petroleum-derived and releases toxins when burned. For people with sensitivities, allergies, or respiratory concerns, that's a problem.
Soy wax is different. It's:
- Plant-based and biodegradable
- Clean-burning — produces significantly less soot
- Longer lasting than paraffin (up to 50% more burn time)
- Fragrance-free friendly — holds botanical texture beautifully without needing added scent
What You'll Need
- Soy wax flakes (available at craft stores or online)
- Cotton wicks
- Heat-safe glass jars (4–8 oz work well)
- Dried botanicals — try lavender buds, rose petals, chamomile flowers, or calendula
- A double boiler or microwave-safe pouring pitcher
- A thermometer
- Chopstick or pencil (to hold the wick in place while pouring)
Makes approximately 2–4 candles depending on jar size.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep your jars
Clean and dry your glass jars completely. Secure a wick in the center of each jar using a wick holder or by taping a chopstick across the top and threading the wick through. The wick should touch the bottom of the jar.

Step 2: Melt your wax
Using a double boiler, melt your soy wax flakes over medium heat, stirring gently. Use a thermometer and heat to around 170°F. Remove from heat and allow to cool to approximately 140°F before pouring — this helps prevent sinkholes and cracking.

Step 3: Pour slowly
Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared jars, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. Pour slowly and steadily to avoid air bubbles.

Step 4: Add your botanicals
While the wax is still slightly soft (not fully set), gently press your dried botanicals onto the surface. Lavender buds, rose petals, and chamomile create a beautiful, spa-like finish. Less is more — a light scatter looks more elegant than a heavy layer. DO NOT PLACE THEM CLOSE TO THE WICK!
Step 5: Let it cure
Allow your candles to cure at room temperature for at least 24–48 hours before burning. Resist the urge to rush this — curing gives the wax time to fully set and improves scent throw (even without added fragrance, botanicals release a subtle natural aroma when warmed).
Step 6: Trim and enjoy
After each burn, trim the wick to ¼ inch. This prevents smoking and ensures a clean, even burn. Light and relax!
Tips for Sensitive Skin & Sensory Sensitivities
- Skip the fragrance oils entirely — the botanicals provide gentle visual and subtle aromatic interest without overwhelming scent
- Choose unbleached cotton wicks — they burn cleaner than zinc-core wicks
- Burn in a ventilated space — even clean-burning candles benefit from a little airflow
- Store away from direct sunlight — this preserves the color of your botanicals longer
